What is a stomach ulcer? A small hole in the gastrointestinal tract is known as Stomach Ulcer or peptic ulcer. The ulcer that occurs in first 12 inches of small intestine beyond the stomach is the most common type and its called duodenal. A stomach ulcer size can be between 1/8 of an inch to ¾ of an inch. Ulcers that are formed in stomach are called gastric ulcers. Stomach ulcers are very painful while the duodenal ulcers are mostly not painful. Stomach ulcer are very common and every year the affect million Americans.

Causes of Stomach Ulcers?
Stomach ulcers are caused by the gastric or intestinal mucosal lining destruction. This destruction is caused by hydrochloric acid, its an acid normally present in digestive juices of the stomach. Gastric and duodenal ulcers are caused by infection with the bacterium helicobacter pylori. Helicobacter pylori can be transmitted from one person to another through infected food and water. Helicobacter pylori peptic ulcers can be treated with antibiotics.
Regular and continuous use of anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin can also cause ulcers. Cigarette smoking is another important cause of ulcer.
Stomach Ulcer Symptoms
The burning feeling in the stomach is the one main symptom of stomach ulcers. This feeling can remain between half an hour to three hours. Stomach ulcer pain mostly occurs in the upper abdomen, but on some occasions it also occurs below the breastbone. Some people feel this pain right after their meal but for some people this pain occurs hours after eating. The pain can awaken people at night. You may feel pain for weeks and then no pain for some weeks. This pain can be relieved by having some rest, drinking milk, eating or taking antacids.
Some other symptoms are appetite and sudden weight loss. Duodenal ulcer surfers gain weight because they eat more to relieve pain. Persistent vomiting, black stool or blood in the stool and anemia are few other symptoms.
Risks of Developing a Stomach Ulcer
•	People who have a family history of ulcers
•	Smoking, it also causes delay in treatment
•	Excess alcohol consumption
•	nonsteroidal anti-inflammatorymedications (aspirin) or corticosteroids.
•	Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
•	Irregular or skipped meals, Improper diet
•	Blood Type O (duodenal ulcers)
•	Stress, it is not a cause of ulcer, but it can be a contributing factor
•	Chronic disorders such as liver disease, emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis may increase exposure to ulcers

Definition of Ulcer

Ulcers are sores which are formed in the lining of the stomach, just below the stomach and at the start of the small intestine in the duodenum. Some times it can form in esophagus. Generally they have size of ¼ to ¾ inch in diameter but some times they can be of 1 to 2 inches in diameter.

Stomach and duodenum ulcers are normally referred to as peptic ulcers.

Description of Ulcer

As we all know that stomach is a muscle bag that crushes and mixes food with digestive juices. These juices are hydrochloric acid and pepsin. If the lining of the stomach or duodenum is damaged in some place the acid and pepsin treat this lining as food and start breaking it down.

Too much acid and pepsin can damage the stomach lining and this can result in ulcers. But this dmagae comes first from some other causes, which makes the stomach lining prone to even an ordinary level of gastric acid.

Causes and Risk Factors of Ulcer

The stomach creates a mucus coating to defend itself from hydrochloric acid and pepsin. It does so by producing bicarbonate and by circulating blood to the stomach lining to acid in cell renewal and repair. An ulcer can be formed if any one of these functions is weakened.

Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori is the primary cause of ulcer. It is a spiral shape bacterium found in the stomach. It is able to twist through the layer of mucous that protects the cavity of stomach and attach to the cells on the surface of stomach wall, where it produces urease. Urease is an enzyme that generates ammonia.

H. pylori is thrived by a substance that neutralizes the stomach acid and it is generated by urease. H. pylori thin the mucous coating of the stomach and it weakens the stomach’s defense. This makes it more susceptible to the acid and pepsin’s damaging effects. It inflames the area by poisoning the nearby cells and produces more stomach acid.

H. pylori is the primary cause of ulcer but there are some other factors as well which play a role in development of ulcer. These include use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, lifestyle and inability of stomach to defend itself against digestive fluids, hydrochloric acid and pepsin.

NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin), naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox), or piroxicam (Feldene) interfere with the stomach’s ability to produce mucus and bicarbonate. They also affect flow of blood to the stomach, hinder cell repair and cause the stomach’s defense mechanisms to fail.

Lifestyle factors include smoking, drinking caffeine, consuming alcohol and stress. Smoking causes the delay in the healing of ulcers and it can cause recur of ulcer as well.

Acid secretion in the stomach is stimulated by caffeine, thus infuriating the pain of an existing ulcer.

Alcoholic cirrhosis has been linked to an increased risk of ulcers. Heavy drinking can cause delay in ulcer healing.

Emotional stress can increase ulcer pain. Physical stress increases the risk of development of gastric ulcer.

Ulcer Symptoms

There can be no symptoms of ulcers or you may experience the following symptoms:

A burning pain in the abdomen somewhere between the breastbone and the navel. The pain is usually worse a couple of hours after a meal or in the middle of the night specially when the stomach is empty.

Nausea

Vomiting

Loss of appetite

Sudden Weight loss

Tiredness & weakness are symptoms of bleeding ulcer

Blood in vomit or stool. When blood is in the stool, it appears tarry or black

Diagnosis of Ulcer

There are many options for doctors to diagnose ulcer.

Performing endoscopic and x-ray examinations.

Testing for H. pylori.

By using fiber-optic endoscope doctor can get a direct view of upper digestive tract. This procedure is called Endoscopy.

The doctor may also perform a gastroscopy, in which a flexible tube-shaped device with a special light-conducting properties is put down the throat and it allows the doctor to see the ulcer and obtain tissue samples for microscopic examination to determine if the ulcer is cancerous.

“Nobody should smoke cigarettes - and smoking with an ulcer is like pouring gasoline on a burning house.” Dr. Sara Murray Jordan

Cigarette smoking is another major cause of ulcer formation and it causes failure in its treatment as well so here is a Quit Smoking Tip that can change your life.

Do you want to quit smoking? There is a very powerful quit smoking tip that can literally change your life – because it would ensure your 100% success. Do you want to know what this is? Read on and find out all about it.What You Need To Quit Smoking Once For AllI read once a quip that made me smile – ‘Who says quitting smoking is difficult? I have quit it five times and there is nothing to it.’ Yes, usually this is what happens. You think you left smoking for good and the habit is behind you. Then, you just smoke once with your friends – for the sake of old times – and that is it.In your mind, this is just a one-time-smoke bit; nothing to worry about. This would be like an occasional chocolate cake slice when you diet. However, in no time, you find yourself ‘treating’ yourself on a regular basis, and supposedly out of the blue you will back smoking regularly again.

You need to know and keep in mind that getting back to smoking is extremely easy. You also need to know what you would encounter when you attempt to stop smoking. The withdrawal symptoms can be very unpleasant and painful. Are you ready to tackle this problem head on? Do you know what medication can help you with the withdrawal symptoms? Do you know how long it takes to get rid of the habit? You need to have nerves of steel and a high level of commitment to get yourself rid of this toxic habit. The Difference Between Success And Failure – A Great Quit Smoking TipWhen you decide to quit smoking, take another decision in your mind. Decide never to smoke a cigarette that is bought with your money, and never carry a pack on you.

How this quit smoking tip helps you stay off cigarettes? Read on.

1.	The first part of the quit smoking tip – never buy your own cigarettes means that if you smoke you would need someone to offer you one. Most people do not like to share their cigarettes on a regular basis and if you are identified as one who is out for freebies, you would very soon be a loner.

2.	The second part of the quit smoking tip – never carry a pack of cigarettes with you. This means that you cannot depend on having a cigarette when you need one – behavior change – and hence, you would outgrow the dependency on it over time. For more information about quitting smoking.

To digest food and kill bacteria stomach produces acid. Some cells inside the lining of the stomach and duodenum produce natural mucus barrier which protects the lining of the stomach and duodenum because of this acid. Normally there is a balance between the acid made and the mucus defense barrier. If there is an alteration in this balance and it allows the acid to damage the lining of stomach or duodenum it can cause ulcer.
Complication can also occur in some cases so one should be careful and serious about ulcers and consult with physician.

Causes of Duodenal Ulcer

Infection with Helicobacter pylori
A major cause of duodenal ulcer is H. pylori infection (helicobacter pylori). If it is not treated its infection can stay for rest of your life.

Anti-inflammatory drugs

NSAIDs anti inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen etc can sometimes affect the mucus barrier of the duodenum and can cause ulcer. Chances of ulcers caused by these drugs are very low (about 1 in 20).

Other causes and factors
There are some other factors of developing duodenal ulcer as well and it includes smoking, stress and heavily drinking.

Symptoms of a duodenal ulcer?
•	A very common symptom of duodenal ulcer is the pain. This pain is in the upper abdomen just below the sternum (breastbone). This pain comes and then goes and mostly it occurs before meals or if you are hungry. Some time this pain so bad that it can wake you up from sleep.
•	Bloating, retching, and feeling sick are some other symptoms. You may feel particularly ‘full’ after a meal. Sometimes the pain is triggered by food.

A corneal ulcer is a painful wound on the surface of the eye. It is in the cornea which overlays the iris (the colored part of the eye).
The damage is very much same as a scrape or cut on the skin. Over the deeper eye layers the epithelium (a layer of tissues) covers the normal cornea. If the epithelium is damaged it can cause infections which results in perforation of the eye if it is not treated.

The signs of corneal ulcers are squinting, redness, cloudiness, tearing and lethargy. Ulcer on the cornea is identified by a special stain called flourescein.

The causes of corneal ulcers are injuries, abnormal eyelashes that cause irritation in surface, lack of tear production and infections. Some times the exact cause of ulcer is not known. Corneal ulcers are characterized according to location, depth, associated diseases, and its cause.

The depth of ulcer is the base for the treatment. If the corneal ulcers are very deep then surgery is required to prevent or treat a full thickness perforation, whereas some ulcers respond to simple application of medications to reduce infection and pain. Chronic erosions also known as indolent ulcers are superficial and they heal very slowly unless special techniques are performed and sometimes it requires surgery as well.

People can be in serious discomfort if they are suffering from Bleeding ulcers which are also called peptic ulcers. But bleeding ulcers can be treated very easily. With proper treatment the pain can be normalized and the surfer can live a normal life.

There are two main reasons for bleeding ulcers. One is the infection of H.pylori bacteria and the use of NSAIDS. Secondly smoking, use of ibuprofen, too much alcohol consumption and physical disturbance can lead to bleeding ulcer or peptic ulcer.

All the symptoms are painfull but some people may not notice these symptoms at all. The common symptoms of bleeding ulcer are severe pain in stomach which can last from few minutes to hours, a hunger like pain in the navel sometimes extending into the back, and bloating with nausea after the consumption of food. Sudden and unintended weight loss is also a symptom of ulcer. Blood vomiting and stool that resembles tar is also a symptom of bleeding ulcer.

Physician advice to take antibiotics if ulcer is caused by H.pylori bacteria. Antibiotics are used to control the infection.

Bleeding ulcers can be treated but if not treated properly it can lead to complications. So it is always important to contact physician if these symptoms are found or ulcer is diagnosed.
